Dear Student,

I was very pleased to hear that you will be participating in a Penn State international short-term program. Your international program will add great value to your academic experience. In the interests of ensuring that all Penn State students participating in travel abroad have access to reliable global medical and assistance services when they are overseas and to minimize the risk of problems for our students while traveling, Penn State University requires all students on short-term international programs to purchase a global assistance plan, which includes health insurance coverage from the HTH Worldwide insurance company, tailored specifically to the needs of students traveling internationally. We make this very inexpensive purchase a condition of your participation in the program and ask you to go to the following website to sign up for this important coverage:

The HTH International Provider Community brings together nearly 4,000 carefully selected physicians, dentists and other health providers in 185 countries outside the U.S. All contracted providers speak English, as well as other languages. The HTH Provider Community also includes hospitals and other healthcare facilities. Students can search the Provider Community for physicians in their destination, find appropriate local clinics and hospitals, review detailed profiles of physicians and medical facilities, schedule appointments, and store this information in their personal Well Prepared profile.

Medical Coverage for this plan is described in the following pamphlet: http://www.hthstudents.com/docs/custom/psu_sa_pamphlet.pdf

Earn Six Credits and Learn Chinese Communication and Business

The on-line and filed study program offers students a Chinese business and communication study abroad, two- course, 6 credit experience. Students will have the opportunity to take IB 303 and/or CAS 352 on-line beginning in March 15, 2011, with some of the initial course work being completed on-line through ANGEL. In May 2011 students will travel to Beijing, China and stay at The Capitol University of Economics Business where they will participate in daily classes with Chinese and other international students who attend CUEB which will be taught by PSU professors. Students will work in multicultural teams on various international business and communication case studies and real time projects. Students will also visit Chinese, American, and Multinational businesses where they will be exposed to international business practices and the importance that communication plays in the global marketplace. Emphasis on excellence in oral communication is a focus in Chinese schools. Speech competitions are televised throughout the country and are followed like a sport. Both U.S. and Chinese students will work together on public speaking and business presentations and present them as part of this experience. The students will visit such places as DISNEY English, a Chinese brewery, various manufacturing facilities, the Olympic complexes, amongst others to be scheduled that will create real world learning opportunities for the students while fostering an understanding of international business and communication practices and cultures. The students will also be exposed to the work of several NGOs (Non governmental organizations) as part of the ‘service learning component’ of the program. The students will also have daily cultural experiences with visits to the Great Wall, The Forbidden City, Tianamin Square and other cultural opportunities being scheduled. The students will all visit and share cross cultural experiences with Chinese high school students as another service learning component. This is second half on-line course beginning March 15, 2011 where students will complete part of the course requirements in advance of China travel from May 19th-June 2nd when the study abroad component takes place. This is a great opportunity for students to have a study abroad experience with the opportunity to earn six credits in two required courses IB 303 and CAS 352.
